The basic process to open a port is:

  1. Setup a static IP address on either your computer or device that you want to forward a port to.
  2. Login to your D-Link DSL-2640T router.
  3. Navigate to the port forwarding section.
    • Click the Advanced link.
    • Click on Virtual Server.
    • Click the User radio button.
    • Click the Add button.
  4. Create a port forward entry.

Step 1

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2

Now we are going to login to your Dlink DSL-2640T router. Your router has a web interface, so you will login to it using your web browser.This can be either Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Edge. It usually does not matter which browser you choose to use.

Open up your web browser and find the address bar. It should look something like this:


In the picture above the address bar has 10.1.1.1 in it. Just replace all of that with the IP address of your Dlink DSL-2640T router.Your router's IP address can also be refered to as your computer's default gateway.

By default the IP address is set to: 10.1.1.1

After entering the IP address of your router you can simply press enter. If all goes well you will see the following screen:

You should see a box prompting you for your username and password.

Now we need to find the port forwarding section in your router. Here's how you do it. Starting from the first page in your router:

Click the Advanced link near the top of the page.

The menu on the left should change. In this new menu, click Virtual Server.

Put a dot into the User radio button.

Click the Add button near the bottom of the page.

Create a name for this forward and put it in the Rule Name box. The name is only used as a reminder and has no effect on the port forward.

The protocol that you want to forward is selected from the Protocol box.

If you are only forwarding a single port number then enter that number into both the Port Start, Port Map and the Port End boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports separated by a hyphen then enter the lowest number of that range into the Port Start, Port Map box and the highest number of that range into the Port End box.

When you are done click the Apply button.

Select the applications you just created in the Available Rules list, then click the Add > button to move them to the Applied Rules box.

When you're finished, click Apply near the bottom of the screen to save your changes.
